Not sure whether to feel optimistic or pessimistic about half the population believing in two of the most heavily documented absolute socioeconomic truths.
Is it really any wonder that it's only half, though? The fundamental conviction of this confused and childish era is that successful people steal from society and "social justice" demands forced redistribution to give the oppressed what they "deserve."
There is also the deep belief, aggressive programmed into a generation of young people, that "lifestyle choices" should not come with adverse consequences. The ancient wisdom of marrying fairly young and staying married was long ago deemed oppressive and politically incorrect.
The benefits of marriage were dismissed as relics of a bygone era when people were struggling to survive on the frontier. Surely with modern technology and wealth, everyone could enjoy adolescence well into their forties and still have a comfortable lifestyle!
And the notion that successful people worked hard for their money and prestige is anathema to a society that believes everyone is either a ruthless exploiter or a helpless victim. The one thing NEVER presented as a valuable social asset to be cultivated is the work ethic.
If you can't get a good job, it's discrimination. There's no such thing as social mobility - if you take a job for the minimum wage, you'll be earning that forever. Paychecks are entitlements. Employers are exploiters. Seeking to please them is selling out to The Man.
Few social assets have been as vigorously degraded over the past generation as marriage. It's an obstacle to the Left's agenda and everything about it contradicts their sexual agenda: libertinism, abortion, radical feminism, transsexualism.
And yet, that asset has not actually lost its value. We've just thrown away our cultural ability to communicate the value of marriage and hard work, to the people who most need to hear it, because teaching those lessons is denounced as judgmentalism and class snobbery.
Which is bitterly ironic, because nothing would prime the pump of class mobility like restoring widespread appreciation for the value of marriage and hard work. The REAL class warfare was convincing so many people that neither of those things was particularly valuable. /end
