At the first whiff of a viral story which advances left-wing narratives, most of the media will instantly abandon every principle of investigative reporting and editorial diligence it ostentatiously claims to hold. It all goes out the window in a microsecond.
It's bad enough that lazy reporters love building stories out of social media posts and trending Twitter topics. Even worse is that media uses social media as an excuse to cover stories that would never have passed editorial scrutiny in earlier times.
"Why, if it's hot and people are buzzing about it, we just HAVE to cover it!" they say. They'll weasel out of criticism by claiming they were really covering the buzz, not so much the original incident. It's not their fault that 50k lefty social media users were wrong in unison!
Because the hunger to advance left-wing narratives is so powerful with DNC Media, they suspend their critical faculties and refuse to debunk left-wing viral sensations. Social media response teams are the first to cover the story, not the A-list investigative reporters.
And because big media orgs are desperate to pump out clickable content, instant commentary and fraudulent big-picture analysis quickly follows the ratty little story that old-time editors would have known better than to run with. Narratives are pushed hard and fast.
The cycle of garbage media comes full circle when the social media teams for big papers and TV shows create Tweets and Facebook posts to promote bad reporting about left-wing agitprop. The tweets are often even more misleading than the full stories.
Tweets have no room for even the minimal skepticism and qualifications that might have been present in the full stories. Suddenly everyone targeted by left-wing activists is simply and unambiguously guilty of whatever Lefty decided to accuse them of.
Social media "buzz" becomes garbage reporting pushed through even worse Tweets that become fuel for more buzz. By the time the original story is debunked, we might be into a second media cycle "reporting" on buzz the media itself created by reporting on the original buzz.
It's a stampede because nobody in DNC Media wants to be left behind. Nobody wants to be the only outlet that didn't cover whatever left-wing social media users are screaming about. The more left-wing narrative boxes it ticks, the less diligence DNC Media performs.
And when the original story is debunked? No problem! "Fake but accurate" becomes the mantra. Sure, THIS story had holes, but it revealed Deeper Truth, we should have a National Conversation, here's an unrelated story that proves racism and sexism really ARE problems.
DNC Media begins frantically searching for angles that can keep the Narrative alive, even though the big story was false. This is all about Narratives, not fact-based reporting. It's all about nourishing the prejudices of the Left and keeping its partisans energized.
That's why, over two years into an alleged Golden Age of Investigative Reporting, you just saw the entire media fall for two huge phony stories within as many days. Fake News is smoke belching out of the muffler. Fake NARRATIVES are the fuel burning in the engine. /end
