Had some good discussions at CES with some AmEx & IBM people about the constant stream of corporate hacks. Industry doesn't want regulation, but the current Wild West atmosphere hurts everyone but the hackers.
Law enforcement attention can draw more attention while doing little to prevent future attacks. So companies see even massive breaches as mostly a PR problem, while for customers it's a privacy & security matter.
Companies mostly just hope there's another, bigger, hack as soon as possible to distract the public from the brand damage. That's not a healthy environment for consumers, who must defend themselves but can only do so much.
