Typical with Putin's Russia, a good domestic US example of why "both sides" demands often fail. When one side wants the crisis itself, good-faith negotiation are a waste of time.
Trump doesn't want an immigration solution. He needs a crisis and if there isn't one, he'll invent it. As I've said about Putin for 10 years now, confrontation itself is the goal. There's no negotiating with that, only winning or losing.
This is why "just give him what he wants" or "meet him halfway" is so stupid. What he wants is conflict. There's no appeasing that, only losing over and over.

Imagine a leader boasting about his fond correspondence with Hitler after the gas chambers are discovered.
Kim Jong-un oversees North Korea as a giant concentration camp, one of the most brutal regimes in history, protected by nuke and missile programs from Russia while providing slave labor to China & Russia.
It was "inconvenient" to point this out when W Bush & Obama still hoped to have Putin as an ally, and we are all paying for that incorrect "pragmatic" moral abdication. Trump openly embraces it.

When Trump cried "witch hunt" even as indictments rolled in, I said "Where there are witches, hunt them." I pointed out this dynamic re rooting out the KGB in Russia after the USSR fell in Winter Is Coming.
Instead of exposing the evil rot at the core of the Soviet totalitarian state, everyone said "move on" and "avoid witch hunts". That brought us Putin just 9 years later, with all the witches behind him.
When I said I wouldn't forget or forgive those who empower Trump now, that's the background. Expose them & remember them because if you don't, they will betray your trust again as soon as it's convenient.

One of the worst strategic blunders in any endeavor—chess, business, warfare—is being blinded by narrow focus and certainty. Having more diverse input is a good way to avoid it. (Though legal in chess!)
E.g., having politicians or military whose families have experience in authoritarian regimes offer invaluable insight. The broader the input base, the fewer blind spots.
Meant to say NOT legal to get diverse input in chess, of course, unless it's advanced chess...

It's tempting to say that centrism involves always insisting that both sides are wrong, even when one side proposes exactly what you're demanding. But it goes further than that: bothsidesism leans right. Obama got no credit for being exactly the politician they claimed to want 2/
But Paul Ryan was praised endlessly for budget proposals that, aside from being dishonest, relied entirely on spending cuts while actually cutting taxes. Huge double standard favoring the right 3/

When I was in high school, I took a highly coveted “Modern Western Civilizations” course. We all got to choose our own final essay topics from a list. I nabbed “Should Holocaust denial be taught in schools?”

“Modern Western Civilizations” was one of those rare courses in my high school that actively encouraged debate, as long as it was backed up by reason and research (a qualifier dearly lacking from the public forums of today, but to be fair, this was 1998).
The course was taught by Brian Tuddenham, who was hands down one of the sharpest and most encouraging teachers that Scarborough was ever lucky to call its own. He encouraged dissent and skepticism, but he demanded that it be anchored to a moral core (again, a non-2018 qualifier).
