No. This is a complete misunderstanding of what's going on.

Trump is powerless to keep the government shut down, and Pelosi and Schumer are powerless to open it.

The only person right now who has power over this standoff is Mitch McConnell.
It doesn't matter what Trump does and it doesn't matter what Pelosi and Schumer do. There are enough votes in the Senate to pass a clean CR *and* override a veto. There are NOT votes for a CR with a wall.

The *only* way this ends is when McConnell advances the clean CR. Period.
I know people are keen to frame this as Trump and Democrats staring each other down, trying to make each other blink. But that's not what this is.

This is Congress having the votes AND intention to override Trump, and one single senator blocking this from happening.

Barr's view of criminal justice seems to be stuck in 1992.

At the time, yes, crime was high and communities of color were begging for zero-tolerance laws. But Barr seems to have missed the following 25 years that proved mass incarceration only made these communities suffer.
What Barr needs to realize is the more people you lock up, the more families you destroy and the more unemployable ex-cons you create.

There comes a point that there are diminishing returns to locking people up, because you are worsening these problems, which creates more crime.
Rather than lengthening prison sentences, we need to look for ways to make prison sentences more rehabilitative.

Expand prison education programs and time credits. Make re-entry easier by eliminating parole fees and public benefit restrictions, and passing ban-the-box laws.

In fact it would probably take very little of their money, because few people who make more than $10 million a year receive it as earned income. This is why in the 1950s, when the top marginal tax rate was 94%, the *effective* tax rate was more like 45%.
I'm not opposed to @AOC's idea of creating more tax brackets that go up to 70%, but if we REALLY want to shift the tax burden to the rich, we should 1) raise capital gains taxes, 2) eliminate step-up in basis, and 3) end all income deductions that aren't targeted at the poor.
Also, this won't really make the tax code more progressive, per se, but: return-free filing. Now.

The way the government requires you to duplicate the work they already do calculating your taxes is ridiculous and wastes millions of man-hours every year.

Watson added that while he hoped everyone was equal, "people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true."

I'm guessing Watson is not actually one of those people. But okay.
James Watson is a case of the trap some scientists fall into, where their skill in their own field makes them think they can weigh in on other fields they don't understand.

When a scientist does this, their personal biases shine through. And in Watson's case it's REALLY ugly.
And FYI, Watson was also a spectacular misogynist.

In The Double Helix, he made clear that he was extremely offended by Rosalind Franklin's lack of femininity (his work would never have been possible without hers).

The crisis on the boarder is real, but it is not from south of the boarder.
It is in fact domestic terrorism from armed militias, likely white supremacists.
These militias are;

Now, I doubt what they target for theft is anything that can be easily or somewhat easy to obtain through normal channels. Especially fire arms, the lack of restrictions makes getting them from a local gun store more convenient than stealing, especially from the military.
Imaging, if Timothy McVeigh had obtained military equipment, that would even be near impossible to get through the black market/modern dark net channels.

What he used was large amounts fertilizer, easy to access at the time.

So 1 of these 200 militias is planning something BIG.

Here’s the reality: this shutdown could end with Trump cracking—or with McConnell simply overriding a Trump veto and re-passing the spending bill that previously sailed unanimously through the Senate and, in the next Congress, just passed the House.

The conventional wisdom is that voters have short memories and that damage from shutdowns fades fast. But that won’t apply if this lasts for months. Nobody forgot health care repeal. This shutdown will cause more & more real pain. And the public knows who’s inflicting it on them.

Trump insisted on cutting family-based immigration too.

His plan got 39 votes.

Now he doesn’t have the wall $ — or the family immigration cuts.

Watching the chaos that is JFK airport on Snapchat and @flightradar24. Cannot believe it’s allowed to operate like this and hasn’t been shut down with all inbounds diverted.
The most insane part of the JFK madness right now is that it has been going on for DAYS. Seeing some jokes about airlines turning round over the Atlantic, but no joke, that’s a better option right now.
Meanwhile, there are two Aeroflot flights with the same flight number on the ground at JFK. I can’t even.
