This 10-year challenge thing was A BIT EMOTIONAL, as 10 years ago this month was the first month of my year of ~underemployment~ ... which eventually led to my coming to DC in November of 2009.
Looking through those pictures was seriously like opening a door to another universe. I was drunk way too often, and I was lost — even when I wasn’t drunk.
But, it was also when I restarted Law Dork — the blog is started in law school — and it was the beginning of a new career, soon to be a new city, and — within a year and a half — a new life when I got sober.
It was the beginning — even though everything I saw, or allowed myself to see, at the time convinced me otherwise.
I started writing more and more about LGBT developments, and when I was finally able to move to DC I had built up enough of a body of work that I started freelancing for @metroweekly. That led to a part-time job, which soon became a full-time job, which soon became my career.
That led to BuzzFeed in 2012, which — with several trips around the planet, including covering the marriage equality movement, working at the Supreme Court, and interviewing a president and several cabinet members — led to today.
And here I am. Living a life unlike anything I could have imagined at a happy hour in Columbus a decade ago. The lesson: Keep going, ask for help, believe in your possibilities — even if you don’t know what they are.
