Hebrew Free Loan Associations are offering help to furloughed govt workers and those working without pay. No interest loans, customized repayment schedules to meet the needs of the workers. hflawa.org/application
I dunno if people know about the HFLAs--it seems like barely anyone who's not Jewish knows about them, and even a lot of Jews don't--but they're a very cool tradition.
Basically they do small interest-free loans to people in need. I don't know if this is true for 100% of them, but most of them lend to non-Jews as well as Jews.
Most of them focus on lending people money to help get out from under medical bills, to escape predatory lending, for immigration, for adoption, etc.
Some of the associations are exploring interest-free student loans. I'm not sure if any of them have actually started doing it at scale--I imagine the student loan industry would find ways to shut them down if they tried. But I hold out a tiny hope that it could happen.
