FYI: The Trump admin has quietly resumed separating immigrant families at the border.
At one agency, the children were put into temporary foster care and shelters with little or no indication that they arrived at the border with their parents: propub.li/2QcsPvY
Reminder: The Trump administration is systematically locking up thousands of children at unheard of rates - now almost 15,000 are in U.S. custody.
The government classifies these children as "unaccompanied"
The detention center for young migrants at Tornillo is on the brink of closing for good.
@jimsciutto: "Has North Korea made any verifiable, irreversible progress on denuclearization?"
Fmr. US Special Rep. for North Korea Policy, Joseph Yun: "I'm afraid the answer to that Jim, is no."

Day 18 since Congress & Trump have not agreed on a spending bill.
Government agencies are now shut down.
More than 420,000 government workers to work without pay, including 41,000 federal law enforcement and correctional officers. #TrumpShutdown
As we wind down day 18 of the #TrumpShutdown, let's not forget:
"I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it."
Secret Service agents, including members of the protective services division, are growing anxious and angry about working without pay.
“They are asking you to put your life on the line and not paying you — it’s ridiculous," a 20-year veteran says.
Dozens of U.S. diplomats and embassy staff shepherding Pompeo through the Middle East over the next week will be working without pay bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Trump falsely claimed his predecessors encouraged him on the border wall. Pence, with NBC this AM, tried shifting him away from the lie by calling it an "impression" about "border security"
That’s not what Trump said.
"How can the American people trust [Trump] when he says this is a crisis when he says things over and over again that aren't true?"
The Daily 202: The wall has become the symbol of the Trump presidency — and his credibility gap
These W.H. talking points give a pretty good foreshadow of Trump’s message in his 1st Oval Office address.
“...border is overwhelmed with illegal immigration, gang violence, crime, drugs & human trafficking...”
“Crisis” used, “terrorism” isn’t.
Ted Lieu: "This national emergency is completely made up. If you look at the facts, violent crime is down across the U.S., property crime is down, immigrants commit less crime, and border crossings are down. The President's going to lose in court." msnbc.com/hardball/watch…
Mitch McConnell reiterates that the Senate won't vote on legislation to re-open the government unless it has Trump's support.
He calls on Democrats to "get serious about negotiating with [Trump]."
CBS, NBC, and CNN have all agreed to air the Democratic response to Trump's address tonight.
The emergency on the border is so bad that 8 members of Trump's Cabinet, including Trump himself and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, are currently scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month, according to Axios.
No mention of the $2-trillion increase in the National Debt since he took office.
Turkish media: Trump's National Security Adviser John Bolton is preparing to leave Ankara after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denied meeting with him
“We cannot accept Bolton’s messages given from Israel,” the Turkish president said, adding that Bolton made a “serious mistake.”
Trump's plans to pull US forces out of Syria appears to be in jeopardy as Turkish President Erdogan rebuffs calls that he not attack US-armed Kurdish forces in Syria and threatens to launch military invasion without US coordination:
Another resignation: Anthony Zinni, a retired Marine Corps general and former head of U.S. Central Command ... is the latest four-star general to exit the admin.
Zinni resigned after realizing he could not help resolve the Qatar dispute.
The US State Department downgraded the EU delegation's diplomatic status in Washington from member state to international organization.
"We don't exactly know when they did it, because they conveniently forgot to notify us," said a EU official
Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who in 2016 met with Trump campaign officials in Trump Tower, has been charged by federal prosecutors in a separate case that showed her close ties to the Kremlin, NYT reports. nyti.ms/2GYoFDS?smid=n…
Paul Manafort's lawyers filed a response to allegations by Mueller's office that he lied after signing a plea deal.
They tried to keep certain sections secret by redacting, but it was done wrong, making the information public.
Manafort's attys failed to redact.
Due to the error, we learn:
1) Paul Manafort & Konstantin Kilimnik, who has been tied to Russian intelligence, met in Madrid during the campaign.
2) Manafort shared polling data with Kilimnik.
3) They discussed "Ukrainian peace plan."
Manafort attorneys also accidentally reveal via failed redaction that Mueller says Manafort was in contact with "a third-party asking permission to use Mr. Manafort’s name as an introduction in the event the third-party met the President."
Supreme Court apparently backs Mueller, won't shield mystery company from having to comply with grand jury subpoena (and pay fines for not complying).

In case you missed yesterday's thread:
@SpeakerPelosi: "On the very 1st day of this Congress, House Dems passed GOP legislation to reopen government & fund border security...Trump is rejecting this over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on a wall."
@SenSchumer: "We don't govern by tantrum...The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a 30-foot wall....Mr President, reopen the government & we can work to resolve our differences over border security. But end this shutdown now."
Both PAUL MANAFORT & RICK GATES provided data (including private TRUMP polling) to KONSTANTIN KILIMNIK. He was asked to pass it along to OLEG DERIPASKA, who had close ties to the Kremlin & a prior business relationship with Manafort. nytimes.com/2019/01/08/us/…
