One of the hardest things for the collusion theory to explain is why the Kremlin did not collude with Merkel, with Corbyn or Hillary. These people were left wing. You can make a plausible case for Russian conspiracy only by throwing out the WaPo op-ed's logic.
The real strategic threat to Russia was never America but China. The Russians share a border and border conflicts w/ China, but not with America. Realistically the Russians know America will never invade Russia. Can the Russians be so sure about Siberia?
To the Kremlin the biggest threat must have been the relative decline of the West vis a vis China caused by the corrosive effects of its own leftover useful fools. This would give them the motive for undermining Western Left. They had to stop China.
Now I'm not saying the Russians did this but it explains their support for nationalism much more plausibly than the complaints of Western politicians who until recently were quite sympathetic to the Soviet Union.
