The power of the establishment depends significantly on dignity: the awesome, hallowed and unutterable. Trump is striking at the symbols of his foes' power by getting august personalties to give in to their rage.

I'm starting to think it's intentional -- the White House Correspondent's Dinner, now the SOTU -- diminished. The pomp is being let out like sawdust from a dummy. There's also a downside to this. The Brits understand the importance of ceremony to legitimacy.
The Brits held together an Empire with stagecraft. The Queen, Viceroys, Durbars, Reviews, Coronations. And it worked for a long time. Ceremony and dignity is powerful.
