In my book about transracial adoption I went out of my way NOT to claim universality. My story, I said many times; mine alone. I am not sure why a few white people feel the need to email & tell me I shouldn't claim to speak for all transracial adoptees. I never have & never will.
I actually wrote in the book that I've met plenty of adoptees who felt similar things, and I've met some who never did. I believe what people tell me. I ALSO think people can change, and want different things, and we should be better at letting them change and want those things.
Many years ago, I was that adoptee who wasn't going to look for my birth family. I would have told you I didn't think about it much, probably wouldn't do it. And now, you know, I'm me.
I will just say that people should think about the pressure they put on folks NOT to change, or to admit to wanting other things. Someone once told me how "refreshing" it was that I hadn't ever felt a strong need to search for my birth family. I wonder what she'd think of me now.
Anyway: Let People Be Who They Are And Change And Love Them No Matter What would be my campaign motto, which a terrible campaign motto and that's why I am not running for anything
Also! Lovelies, if you don't like a book, it's totes okay. It's fine to just tell your friends or sit alone with those thoughts or bring it to the Lord or blog about it—you do not have to email the author. <3
Also having adopted Asian kids does not give you a pass to use racial slurs in your emails to other Asians, thanks.
