It's Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the National Action Network House of Justice in Harlem, where @TheRevAl is ripping into @realDonaldTrump, calling his visit to the MLK monument "a drive-by" he only did after being attacked for having no schedule today.
No surprise to anyone who has ever seen Chuck Schumer speak at a graduation, but he is giving essentially the same speech he gave at NAN a year ago -- quoting the Shirelles: "Mama said there'd be days like this," in talking about Trump's election.
.@NYCMayor is speaking about Dr. King's calls for redistribution of wealth and the need for economic justice alongside racial justice.
Hizzoner is now stumping for his proposals to broaden healthcare programs in the city and to mandate paid vacation time.
.@NYCMayor getting a lot of "No!" and other shouts from the crowd when he promises to "open the doors of Amazon" to residents of city public housing in need of jobs. (.@TheRevAl clapped for it.)
.@NYCMayor also "announced" that the city had connected 15,000 NYCHA residents to better jobs (unclear on what exactly those jobs are). Meanwhile, more than 5,000 NYCHA residents do not have heat or hot water on a frigid day. my.nycha.info/Outages/Outage…
.@RepJerryNadler on Trump's immigration agenda: "We are systematically oppressing the stranger. That will not stand. We cannot permit this. We cannot permit this rogue president to impose a racist regime."
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ALERT: @SenGillibrand has taken the stage here at the House of Justice. "One thing I’ve learned is don’t underestimate her -- because nobody knew her name and now everybody knows her name," @TheRevAl says.
"If I really do care about your family as much as I care about my own, it is my fight -- it has to be my fight," @SenGillibrand says, saying fights against racism cannot be left for people of color alone to burden.
As she did last year, @SenGillibrand turns to the book of Ephesians in talking about fighting against Trump's agenda: "We have to put on the full armor of God."
.@TheRevAl: "And you have a candidate that can quote the Bible to Bible people -- I don’t know if the president knows where Ephesians is."
.@RepJeffries just referred to the "grand wizard of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."
In case anyone wasn't aware the mayor's race has begun, we had strong speeches from @NYCComptroller, @CoreyinNYC and @rubendiazjr here at NAN today.
"We still have individuals in New York City housing that are freezing -- not on the streets but in their damn living rooms," @rubendiazjr says.
