This BBC article features a picture of ushioni (牛鬼, "demon cow") under the caption tsuchigumo (土蜘蛛, "ground spider"). Not only do these two look completely different -- it's *literally written on it* (just above the right horn). Come on...

These past few decades, there's been an ongoing cultural transition from "reach happiness by buying things" to "reach happiness by buying experiences".

The mass market interpretation of the new trend seems almost just as superficial, consumerist, and bad for the planet as before
Fulfilling experiences emerge from genuine human connection and serendipitous discovery. There can't be a mass market for these.

Buy all the "experiences" you can -- you will end up with a very envy-inducing Instagram account, but likely not much happier than where you started.
Maybe the next few decades will see Western culture realize that money in itself can't directly procure happiness... being at peace with yourself and exercising compassion towards others will help you more than all the money in the world. Easier said than practiced though...

In math, the more experienced you are, the more comfortable you get with using shortcut notations and omitting obvious details.

Students like to use verbose, explicit notation, and feel lost when they encounter shortcuts -- thinking they're missing important details.
This reminds me of a pattern I see a lot in grad students in ML -- those least comfortable with abstracting away boilerplate are usually those least familiar with what the boilerplate represents.
I mean, can I really trust a library to compute my gradients? I don't know what's going on behind the scenes... 🤔

We all want safe, responsible AI research. The first step is not misrepresenting the significance of your results to the public, not obfuscating your methods, & not spoon-feeding fear-mongering press releases to the media.

I really regret having to say this, because the paper was actually very good (if incremental, but there's nothing wrong with that). But the surrounding PR blitz and public misrepresentation is causing serious damage to the field and its public perception.

Please don't do this.
Yes, fear-mongering can be a good strategy to inflate the perceived significance of your research. It's also completely irresponsible, and even dangerous. The less PR circus, the more room we will have to talk about the safe and responsible deployment of the latest ML research.

The transition extension clause. A one off extension. But no fixed date is set, apart from it being within this century....
A financial settlement needed to cover transition extension. But Britain won't be treated as a member state -- so it won't be paying and receiving as it does today. It will be outside CAP, for instance, but there are limits set on UK subsidies to farmers.

My mother was a reader, and a peer and fan of James Thurber.
If you've heard of him it's probably because the very worst story he ever wrote got famous.
2. Walter Mitty.
Forget Walter. Everything else Thurber wrote was witty and incisive. He was also a cartoonist.
He was a terrible draw-er. He was a brilliant cartoonist. He had a whole series of Battle of the Sexes cartoons.
3. In each Battle of the Sexes cartoon was a space filled with groups of men and groups of women thowing things at one another. Light household appliances, lamps, toasters...
My mom was born in 1915. Thurber was, I think, a little older than not much.

lest debunk this myth of @JoyAnnReid being popular with russian trolls.
the NBC dataset (while awesome) only includes 454 accounts. with some being in german. That's to small of a sample to say any one person was more popular than anyone else with them.
twitter doesn't even know how many russian accounts are on their own network
from just the NBC data she ranks 28th.
from my data she ranks 46
why the difference?
My data is more complete, it includes another 493 accounts that twitter will soon tell you are russian accounts. (150 have been suspended)

1/ Someone asked me what I thought about IG Direct, the threat it posed to $SNAP in the short and long-term, and any other thoughts I had on IG and $FB vs Snap. Figure I'd do a thread:
2/ I think IG Direct will be FB’s “most used” Snapchat killer to date (Direct has ~375M MAUs whereas IG Stories has ~300M MAUs), but I don’t think it will actually kill $SNAP. It will definitely face user backlash similar to when $FB ripped Messenger out of FB app. See thread:
3/ With FB and Messenger, people thought it was completely unnecessary to have two apps, but they got used to it. Same thing as the Snapchat redesign. But it makes sense for FB/IG… will let them pack more into the Direct camera without weighing down core-IG.
