This is hugely important, but I think we need to go beyond merely an emphasis on the domestic realm of the home. The father should lead his sons out into the world. Historically, a man gave his sons a trade, a name, an inheritance, and a place in the wider community.
Further to this point, it is important to consider the way that, for the NT, the father-son relationship is focused upon the relationship between the *adult* son and his father. Precisely when our culture's father-son relationships weaken, 1st century ones became most pronounced.
This should have a knock on effect for our *theological* deployment of concepts of sonship: alastairadversaria.com/2011/12/17/for….
