Victoria Herrmann, president of The Arctic Institute says:
Despite geographic differences, employment differences, all countries in the Arctic region come back with climate change as the #1 issue on their list of concerns.
"We need to discuss... the rapid change of the arctic region. We need to discuss clean energy for the region. Providing technical resources for communities to adapt to impacts of climate change that we can no longer avoid." - Herrmann
One need only look back to last year's reports on climate to understand this.
"The 2018 NOAA report card found 95 percent of the oldest sea ice in the Arctic has melted. The warming trend will only accelerate that."
"Last month we learned the Greenland ice sheet is perhaps at a tipping point and permafrost is warming at a rate we did not think possible.”

Herrmann also emphasizes the need for broader representation in the discussion today.
"This table is absent of native and indigenous voices. We have to work harder to bring those voices to these tables but also have these discussions at their tables." - Herrmann
"We need to work toward a more inclusive conversation and addresses low carbon transition and the climate adaptation that is necessary to save lives."
