Organisers hand urged everyone to respect the marshals, stay begins the line, and not engage with the counter-protest. “We walk in peace.” #InvasionDay
This is the marshal line out in front of the #InvasionDay march. It is incredibly well organised.
The front of the #InvasionDay march is now past the Russell St intersection on Bourke St, tail still up near Spring St. How good are these guys?!
Favourite thing about the march remains the faintly appalled look on the faces of middle class white people who chose today for a bit of shopping in the city and are hearing 80,000 people chant “they say justice, we say murder.”

Join in, guys #InvasionDay
On crowd numbers: the cops are saying 5000 (definitely too low) and organisers are saying 80,000 (probably too high). I think it’s on par or a bit less/more spread out than last year, which was put at between 30,000 and 60,000. #InvasionDay
I am bad at Crowd numbers but it is some comfort that so is everyone else. #InvasionDay
Coming down Swanston. #InvasionDay
The protest has reached Flinders St. I can’t see the end - this is looking down Swanston. No sign of the alleged counter protest. Seems #InvasionDay > fascists
Behind me on Flinders Station steps are 2-3 people draped in Australian flags and surrounded by a group of people chanting “always was, always will be.” Organisers are trying to call them back for the sit in. #InvasionDay
A sit in, with a chant. #InvasionDay
Organisers say someone (I think police? It’s hard to hear, for reasons) took their microphone and the crowd is now kind of confusingly shouting “what do we want? The microphone. When do we want it? Now.” #InvasionDay
Sit in, Flinders St. I think the crowd goes back to Flinders La on Swanston, it covers the church steps, the station steps, the footpaths, the tram stops. #InvasionDay
Hard to see from from here but it looks like police have removed the two counter protesters. They’re trying to get them out, being mobbed. Organisers tell the crowd to stay back, sit down, not everyone is listening. #InvasionDay
The crowd is still here. They’re attempting to do speeches without a microphone. Good thing it’s Gary Foley, who knows how to project his voice to a crowd. #InvasionDay
Foley: “it’s not about change the date, it’s not about Invasion, it’s about this country facing up to its own history.” #InvasionDay
And a classic Foley finish: “don’t go away today feeling self-satisfied, go away with a commitment to improve yourself... educate yourselves... then go and educate others. If everyone here went out and educate just 10 others we would have half of Melbourne on our side.”
The Melbourne march is breaking up. People are invited to go to Treasury Gardens for the festival.
