President Obama's Clean Power Plan was expected to lead to a steep fall in US coal production. Now the plan has been blocked, and coal production is expected to fall even faster than if it had come into effect: ft.com/content/5c31c4…
Take a look at this. The pale blue line is the @EIAgov projection in 2017 for US coal production if the Clean Power Plan were scrapped. The red line is the 2017 projection if it had taken effect. The dark blue is the 2019 projection, with no CPP. It's even lower than the red line
That's a huge shift in expectations in just two years. It turns out that market forces are pushing generators away from coal and towards gas-fired plants and renewables even faster than President Obama's climate policy had intended
This was called right by @JulesKortenhors two years ago. He said then: "My hunch is that the outcome will in the end beat the Clean Power Plan’s objectives." Now the @EIAgov agrees. ft.com/content/7dd528…
See also this by @JasonBordoff, Trevor Houser and Peter Marsters, from April 2017: energypolicy.columbia.edu/sites/default/…
"President Trump’s efforts to roll back environmental regulations will not materially improve economic conditions in America’s coal communities...
"...responsible policymakers should be honest about what’s going on in the US coal sector — including the causes of coal’s decline and unlikeliness of its resurgence — rather than offer false hope that the glory days can be revived."
That report said: "Under the best case scenario for US coal producers, our modeling projects a modest recovery to 2013 levels of just under 1bn tons a year. Under the worst case scenario, output falls to 600m tons a year." Looks like that worst case scenario is where we're headed
Question: What other energy changes is the @EIAgov underestimating now? (ENDS)
