Civilians always give terrible advice about comedy, so here’s some better advice: You can joke about any topic, but you have to be willing to do it in front of a group of people impacted by that topic. If it makes them laugh, you’ve got yourself a great joke.
White comics can tell a joke about black people, Christian comics can tell a joke about Muslims, etc., but if you aren’t able to make the “targets” laugh, your joke is probably hack and doesn’t get at the deeper truth that comedy is supposed to get at.
That’s it. That’s the rule. No topic or group is off-limits. Make them laugh and don’t be a hack. Being a hack makes the people you’re joking about feel lonely and alienated, which is the opposite of what comedy is supposed to do.
