After much consideration, I've decided that you should hire me to be the CEO of @Starbucks. In preparation for this moment, I have devoted the past 30 years of my life to studying American political theory and practice.
2. My background and expertise as a historian of American politics makes me about as suited to take over Starbucks as your expertise at Starbucks has prepared you to sit atop a complex political system.
3. Seriously...you wouldn't hire someone with zero business experience to run your company. So why on earth would you think that someone with zero political experience could run a freaking country?

Northam should resign. That said, I find it interesting that all of the conservatives who love to complain about “the Twitter mob” seem suddenly unconcerned about Twitter mobs.
1. I don't think this is just a matter of hypocrisy. I think it tells us something interesting and important about the folks who are often most concerned about "Twitter mobs." They are not afraid of "the mob" qua mob, they are afraid of what that supposedly mob stands for.
2. After all, I don't know how to describe what happened on conservative media in regard to Northam's recent comments on abortion other than "a Twitter mob." Virtually every single conservative with a large number of followers jumped all over Northam as a defender of infanticide.

I entered college in 1986 from a small, virtually all white town in Central Pa...and I damn well would have known better than to wear black face to a party, let alone commemorate it with a picture in the yearbook.
And there's a bunch of Democratic and Republican oppo researchers in Virginia who better be looking for other careers right about now.
As @cjane87 pointed out, this film came out in 1986, featuring a white actor in blackface. Haven't seen it, but the synopsis suggests the message of the film is that racism is real, & racism is bad. It still seems shocking, tho, even by 1980s standards. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Man_…

Two non-controversial truths about #HowardSchultz' potential candidacy aren't getting much attention. Both are disqualifying and yet have nothing to do with policy.
The first is simple: we are living through a presidency of an oligarch who had no record of public service before his election.

Given the approval ratings of this president, why would any voter want to repeat that?
Examples abound in history of oligarchs leapfrogging into positions of power in republics and destabilizing them.

We are already in crisis; why deepen it?

1/ #HowardSchultz says lot of silly things, but the dumbest of all is his claim to be a "self-made" billionaire. NO ONE is self made. He wasn't raised on an island by a porpoise. We all have help: family, teachers, mentors, and in his case employees who created value 4 Starbucks.
2/ This self-made conceit is at the heart of American inequality and our rationalization of it. If you believe where people end up is all because of their own effort and skill you'll rationalize racial and class and gender inequity as normal and do nothing to fix it...
3/ You'll ignore the way that luck and various head starts based on being white, male, etc have helped you. What America needs much less of is people like Schultz who lack the humility to admit the way systems favor some (them) and disfavor others...

.@HowardSchultz not a Ross Perot style billionaire setting out to rattle cages, naively thinking he can buy his way onto ballots in 50 states and have a credible chance of winning by appealing to the disenchanted. He's a hostage-taker. And his hostage is the Democratic Party.
In all his interviews, he seems fixated upon "extremists within both parties". His example for extremism within the Democrats? Support for a return to higher marginal tax rates, and expanded or even universal health care like you find in every other advanced democracy on earth.

I think my date thought I was being coy. But, I wasn’t. I was just being honest. A while ago, I decided to deal in reality and not hypotheticals. I have tried and failed to control life. All my effort got me was an anxiety problem and therapy.
