Heartbreaking... This isn’t in NY, this isn’t in CA, this happened just this week right here in VA.

Delegate Todd Gilbert pursued a misogynistic line of questioning that implies women aren’t capable of making their health decisions with their doctors. Watch for yourself.

Delegate Gilbert’s line of questioning shows that he is entirely ignorant to the level of physical and mental trauma womxn experience to have a any-term abortion for any reason. These are HUGE decisions to make that are not taken lightly. Not by women. Not by doctors.

But the minimization of a woman’s ability to make a decision for herself in partnership with their doctor isn’t new from Delegate Gilbert. In 2012 he said most abortions are a decision of a “lifestyle convenience.”

The misogyny and paternalism that comes into play when governments legislate our uterus is apparent when legislators make arguments that are based in skepticism about a womxn’s capacity to make a sound decision.

It’s ridiculous that in 2019 we aren’t at a place where we can TRUST WOMXN. Like... can’t even trust us with medical decisions about our own bodies and health with a doctor.

Oh, and you can miss me with all “but life starts at.....” and “but what about the baby’s right to life....”.

Why?

B/c those are literally considerations women have when making the very serious decision to abort. We don’t need to be told by the law to think about that.
6/10🧜🏻‍♀️
All those arguments do is say that we as womxn aren’t CAPABLE of evaluating all sides of a decision without the government’s interference to mandate that we evaluate ONE side with greater emphasis than equally important factors such as... OUR HEALTH.
7/10 🧜🏻‍♀️
That whole law that womxn have to be offered to listen to the heartbeat of a fetus and the transvaginal ultrasound law? Yeah.... those use TRAUMA to influence womxn’s decision making process. All those say is our elected officials don’t believe womxn are capable of

taking all factors into consideration in the decision making process.

Furthermore, there’s an implication here that we are innately callous, selfish creatures. Come on y’all... we have to all agree that couldn’t be further from the truth.
9/10 🧜🏻‍♀️
In conclusion:
- believe womxn
- trust womxn
- stop legislating our bodies
- womxn are fully capable adults that don’t need your laws babysitting us

Goodnight.

BTW, here is what the proposed legislation actually says which was unfortunately REALLY poorly explained by the Delegate. IMO, that’s a separate issue. Regardless of what the bill says: pro life opposing arguments are still rooted in misogyny. 🧜🏻‍♀️
