Wanted: Stories that give voice to West Virginia teachers, students and parents - less their comments about a bill, a lawmaker or a strike, and more about daily struggles in our public (and even private) schools.
Feels like we in the media have kind of book-ended things - covered teachers when they took over the Capitol and now again when they might do that again. What happened in between?
Not sure how we can improve education when we paint teachers as the enemy - but also more interested in hearing from teachers about how their days work and don't work than whether they like the Senate president.
Less interested in hearing from advocates of one approach from out of state or from pundits who aren't personally invested in West Virginia schools.
Struck by Sen Romano comments about his county having one school that is top performing and another that is at the bottom? Why? Economics? Would love to hear from folks in those communities.
Admire my friends who live-tweet the details of meeting after meeting. Hard and important work to follow what lawmakers are doing. But worry we miss providing crucial context from classrooms, PTO meetings and homes.
Keep thinking about @HoppyKercheval shows on first day of school - asks callers to talk about one teacher who changed their lives. Best show Hoppy does all year.
Isn't how we teach our kids too important to decide the same way we decide everything else? Isn't too important to cover the way we cover everything else?
