Last weekend, I created a new Netflix account to see what someone with no algorithmic viewing history would find. I started with a simple search for Canada. Result included option to click on links for Canadian TV Shows, Canadian Movies, and more. (2/5) michaelgeist.ca/2019/01/hidden…

Not all of this content is strictly Cancon under the points system. Alongside “official” Cancon, there are programs filmed in Canada, starring Canadian actors, or featuring Canadian stories. But it isn’t trivial and it isn’t hard to find. (5/5) michaelgeist.ca/2019/01/hidden…

For the past 20 years, a small collection of cultural groups have been pressing the CRTC to regulate and tax the Internet. After years of consistent rejections from the govt and regulator, today the CRTC reversed that policy in a deeply flawed report (1/7) michaelgeist.ca/2018/05/regula…
The foundation of the report is flawed for at least four reasons. First, Canadian broadcasting regulation is essentially regulation on speech. To extend to the Internet, means virtually no limits. Is the CRTC taxing & regulating newspapers? Podcasts? (2/7) michaelgeist.ca/2018/05/regula…

The Bell website blocking coalition and its supporters argued that the proposal was consistent with other countries and did not implicate freedom of expression, Internet competition & access, and net neutrality. All positions have now been effectively debunked. (1/5)

While pro-site blocking advocates try to dismiss it, here’s the reality: a huge number of Canadians voiced opposition to website blocking. Of course, opposition to the website blocking plan is about far more than the 100,000+ Canadians who spoke out against it. While most supporters either offer anti-piracy generalities or malign the critics, there are dozens of detailed, authoritative critical submissions. (2/5)

1) Thinking, today, about Native identity, and how we speak of it.
2) I used to say "tribe" but realized that just "tribe" wasn't sufficient. For those who did not (and do not) know that we are sovereignty nations, "tribe" alone let them place us as a race or a cultural group.
3) I can talk all day long about growing up on our reservation, doing the things we do as Native people there, and say things like "moccasins" and most people in the US would nod because it would fit with what they know of us as peoples with distinct cultures.
