To be clear, the authors are not arguing that there won’t be a single dominant digits money; they’re articulating the immense challenges arrayed against it, including:

+incentives of big capital to find a “newer, better version”
+theoretically culturally incompatible adopters
They’re good points. To me the interesting question is about escape velocity. It feels likely that the network effect of money is enough to overcome these challenges, but only once a digital proton pet has reached sufficient network escape velocity within early adopter circles
In other words, a digital money that can transcend early adopter (even semi early adopter) circles might have network effects that can over come these challenges, but these challenges could stop them from getting there.
Put differently: is the real battle the battle for the beginning?
