I have been a discussion on our unemployment figures with my brother @wFalabede on how our figures are over stated due to the parameters used. I will keep it as simple as possible so that we can all figure it out..
👇👇👇
Unemployment - to be counted as unemployed, a person must meet three criteria:  he or she

(1) is not currently working
(2) has actively sought work in a recent past period; and
(3) is currently available for work.
NBS defines persons in employment in their reference period as all labour force members that work for pay/wages in the formal sector; and those members that work for at least 20 hours in the informal sector.
20hrs is a high benchmark in Nigeria.

Ghana - 1hr per week
South Africa - 1hr per week
20hrs per week will exclude a whole of Nigerians who are actively working without necessarily grossing this number of hours.

Farmers who work on the farm for 2hrs per day and 15hrs a week, part time teachers, event planners, ushers, make up artistes, marketers..
The unemployment rate is more prevalent within the 15 - 24 year old segment of our labour force. Is it possible for these young people to actually get 20hrs weekly considering the fact that most of them are still under their parents.
Why can't we publish two reports? A report for 20hrs and a report for 1hr according to global standards. When we report the unemployment figures for 20hrs globally, we put the country in a tight spot, scare away investors and create a bad image for ourselves.
Our unemployment figures is a function of our age, a rapidly growing population and our educational structure. In my opinion it is a poor indicator of the performance our labour market.

We need to discuss policies around other contributing factors.
Rapid population growth / young age.

Educational structure - skill acquisition at basic and secondary school level.

Focus on rural jobs, e.g farmers, artisans and other skilled workers who do not need to put in 20hrs weekly. Make their pay count..side hustle..
I will create Jobs..bla bla bla..

How many 20hrs per week job can any president / government create in Nigeria? A make up artiste works for 5 hrs on a wedding weekend, she makes goes home with my monthly salary, is she unemployed?
A photographer does a photoshoot /wedding shoot on a wedding day, works for 7 hrs, is he unemployed? He goes home with 500k..

Caterers, event planners, ushers, bouncers, dancers are they all unemployed because they don't gross 20hrs weekly?
