New paper: Fake news on Twitter during the 2016 U.S. presidential election science.sciencemag.org/content/363/64…

"Fake news accounted for nearly 6% of all news consumption, but it was heavily concentrated—only 1% of users were exposed to 80% of fake news"
There was a large & significant discrepancy between left vs right wrt average proportion of fake news sources in an individual’s feed. People who had 5% or more of their political exposures from fake news sources constituted 2.5% of individuals on the left vs. 16.3% on the right.
"Although 6% of people who shared URLs with political content shared content from fake news sources, the vast majority of fake news shares and exposures were attributable to tiny fractions of the population."

I spent the past 2 days reading this 40 page request for funding for "Phase 2" of the Integrity Initiative. This is the most dystopian thing I've ever heard of. 2/ I'm going to skip to page 15 b/c this is extremely fucked up. In phase 2, each new cluster will be commissioned to produce a study & disseminate (e.g. as an II report, or fed anonymously into local media outlets)

3/ How will journalists know if any of their sources are in these clusters? Will the cluster members be stating their affiliations to journalists? Will articles be labeled? Or is this research going to be presented to the public with no attribution to a government-funded group?

Compare how each makes you feel now vs. years ago. For me:

• FB's used to be exciting, now its birthdays, group posts, other BS. They're hyperinflating it to zero
• Unlike FB, Snapchat's usually means a social interaction
• SMS is decent, but automated texts are devaluing it
Lower quality notifications hurt the user's relationship w/ the product

• Noisy slack integrations make the badge unpredictable
• Uninteresting content (someone posted a photo) makes me care less about FB
• LinkedIn inbound spam means I feel nothing about their notifs
