Here we go again: The reason that the history major is successful at Yale is because Yale kids are rich and know they can get a job with their Yale degree no matter the major. It's nothing more than that, not because they Do It Right.

None of which isn't to say that there aren't good historians at Yale doing a great job. But can we quit focusing our higher education stories on a few elite schools, as if they actually matter to 99% of Americans, as opposed to 75% of the media who went to them.
The history major at my school in undergoing a complete massacre and Yale has absolutely nothing to offer us in fixing that.

This Day in Labor History: February 7, 1894. Gold miners in Cripple Creek, Colorado walk off the job, leading one of the biggest workers victories of the Gilded Age. Let's talk about how this strike has enormous lessons for labor strategies today in the New Gilded Age.
By the 1890s, the area around Cripple Creek was the center of the Colorado gold fields. Cripple Creek was the state's second largest city. The Panic of 1893 could have helped these workers; it was silver prices that collapsed and the government needed all the gold it could get.
But this led silver miners to flood into the mines and convinced the mine owners to lower wages. Announcing a 10 hour day (previously 8) with no pay raise led the miners to walk out.

The hardest thing for everyday people to understand about the mid-19th century is the idea of free labor ideology. And yet we understand basically nothing about the whole period without understanding this. Stanley extends this even further, to gender roles.
I spend a lot of time in my classes on free labor ideology because anyone who claims to study the Civil War or labor history who doesn't know what it means and its permutations actually doesn't understand the subject well at all. And it's not that easy to explain either.

The leftwing skew among administrators is even greater than among professors, and Abrams says it's leading too politically one-sided socialization in residence halls, student centers, etc. (2)

Disclaimer: I recognize that it's even harder for women of color to exist (in general and) in a political sphere. I'm a white, cis, gay woman and I want to acknowledge that's where this perspective is coming from.
2 weeks ago I attended the @IGNITE_National conference in DC and came back feeling more confident in my own abilities + more empowered than I ever have before. I learned so much—most importantly, I learned I have a valuable ambition and the skills to make a difference!!

Here we go again. So much wrongness in this article, it's hard to know where to start.
1) Anyone who extrapolates IT electricity use to 2040 (or even 2025) is making a grave error. Things change so fast in this field that you just can't make predictions that far out.
2) Growth in data use/transfers (even fast growth) does NOT necessarily imply growth in electricity use. Our 2016 analysis of US data centers showed almost a doubling of computations from 2010 to 2014 while electricity use stayed roughly flat. eta.lbl.gov/publications/u…
