Folks, I live in Alexandria, Va. just a couple blocks from a statue honoring the confederacy, memorials to the Robert E. Lee family (as though he were a hero rather than traitor), and near the Jeff Davis Highway. There are over 200 memorials to the Confederacy in Virginia.
The state has institutionalized its racism and wears it with a perverse pride. The political crisis of its governor and attorney general are symptoms of something much greater. It is time to end the practice of honoring of slavery, treason, cruelty & racism.
The statues must come down. The memorials must go. Traitors must be called by their true names. Virginia has become bluer over the years...but that has not produced enough change. Both parties are complicit in their tolerance of the intolerable. The time for change is now.
