A provision in the new NAFTA that could raise the cost of certain drugs in Canada has emerged as a key impediment to the deal being approved in the US — even though it wouldn’t require the US to change anything. I tried to explain this complicated stuff: thestar.com/content/thesta…
Basically: the NAFTA deal requires at least 10 years of intellectual property protection for these cutting-edge biologics. US law already grants 12 years of protection. But Democrats keep proposing to go down to 7 years, and the deal would forbid them from doing that.
Big Pharma notes that the US wouldn’t have to change, and one expert told me such minimums “never” get shortened. But some Dems say they want to try — and @ThePlumLineGS reports that a Dem pollster found this issue is a big winner with Obama-Trump voters: washingtonpost.com/amphtml/opinio…
