A provision in the new NAFTA that could raise the cost of certain drugs in Canada has emerged as a key impediment to the deal being approved in the US — even though it wouldn’t require the US to change anything. I tried to explain this complicated stuff: thestar.com/content/thesta…
Basically: the NAFTA deal requires at least 10 years of intellectual property protection for these cutting-edge biologics. US law already grants 12 years of protection. But Democrats keep proposing to go down to 7 years, and the deal would forbid them from doing that.
Big Pharma notes that the US wouldn’t have to change, and one expert told me such minimums “never” get shortened. But some Dems say they want to try — and @ThePlumLineGS reports that a Dem pollster found this issue is a big winner with Obama-Trump voters: washingtonpost.com/amphtml/opinio…

Right-wing outlets have been gleeful today about Harris supposedly lying about...what music she listened to while smoking weed as a young woman. But as @AsteadWesley notes, these outlets omitted a key part of the exchange. It's not at all clear she was dishonest. (Weird thread!)
Fox (left) and the Daily Wire (right) had Harris being asked what music she listened to when high, and her volunteering, "Definitely Snoop, Tupac for sure." But...she was actually asked a separate question, unmentioned by Fox and the Wire, by the person who volunteered "Snoop."
Here is the full exchange. It seems extremely possible, probably likely, that Harris was intending to respond to DJ Envy's general question, "What do you listen to?" After asking that question, DJ Envy volunteered the "Snoop."

Per pool, Trump just said of his USMCA, which is NAFTA with some revisions, “It has nothing to do with NAFTA.”
The full quote: "This is the NAFTA replacement. It has nothing to do with NAFTA." Trump called it a "very labor-friendly deal, it's a deal that the workers of our country will love."
Trump called on Dem Rep. Ilhan Omar to resign from Congress or at least the foreign affairs committee over comments described by Democratic and Republican leaders as antisemitic, saying her words are "so deep-seated in her heart that her lame apology...was just not appropriate."

In 1992, the year before #NAFTA’s passage, the US had a $5.6 billion trade surplus with Mexico. In 2004, under NAFTA, it reversed with a vengeance; $45.1 billion more in goods came in from Mexico, an unprecedented $50.7 billion swing to deficit. gregpalast.com/how-democrats-…
The macroeconomic modeling I did in my old academic days suggests that, roughly, such a loss of income to the USA costs half a million jobs. You can quibble with the estimate, call it 300,000 jobs or 900,000. But a $50.7 billion crocodile is difficult to disguise as a pet gecko.
American workers could have done worse, of course, and they did. The trade deficit with Canada went from a small $8 billion before #NAFTA to a Katrina-sized $73 billion in 2005. gregpalast.com/how-democrats-…
