The US and Mexico had big automotive sector trade issues that did not involve Canada. There was no reason for Canada to be included in those discussions. We were not excluded. 1/4 #NAFTA #cdnpoli
That the Mexican President mentioned the importance of Canada repeatedly in his call with Trump was helpful. I believe Mexico wants to work with Canada & continue to have free trade with us. They reached a deal with the US & it was only natural to announce it. 2/4 #NAFTA #cdnpoli

So the U.S. and Mexico agreed to some things today to update #NAFTA. I've looked through the documents posted on the USTR site, and here are some highlights:
#RoO, everyone's favorite subject. NAFTA RoO for autos require 62.5% North American content. This has been increased to 75%, which is a significant change. Previous rumors of a 70% content requirement are thus finally disproved.
The U.S. & Mexico also agreed that 40-45% of auto content is to be made by workers earning $16 per hour. That's probably 40% for light trucks, & 45% for pickup trucks. This is all targeted at Mexico. Even if part of this % can come from R&D, this favors the U.S. and Canada.

@MaximeBernier has been the sole MP with the courage and clarity to advance long-overdue good ideas on:
-Supply Management
-Corporate welfare
-Equalization payments
-NAFTA
-Interprovincial trade
-Healtcare and the fiscal imbalance
-Telecom + airline oligopolies

These are all serious issues with substantive bearing on Canada's status as a free, just, and prosperous country. Meanwhile, the rest of our political class chooses to ignore the deeply unfair or wasteful (usually both) status quo on all of the above.
Worse still, across and within party lines, deviation from the incoherent miasma of excuses for the status quo is treated as deeply subversive. These *should* all be boring economic/jurisdictional issues, but they're often treated as sacred + foundational to national identity.
