nmap
i haven't used nmap much except to scan my home network for fun so if i missed something really important i'd love to know!
also i need to find space in there somewhere for "if you don't run nmap as root it can't send icmp (ping) packets, it's better to run nmap as root"
also be careful when nmapping in a network you don't administer! it's a popular hacking tool so using nmap is often discouraged / banned. i made all of the examples in this comic "nmap scanme.nmap.org" and "nmap your home network" for a reason :)

i reorganized my blog's front page by category instead of just listing all the posts by date. can't tell if it's better or worse :) jvns.ca
these were the categories I came up with (i think my favorite is probably "how a computer thing works")
I found a kind of nice way to do this: instead of tagging each blog post with a category (which I'm way too lazy to do), I just made a text file with all the posts (github.com/jvns/jvns.ca/b…), organized them into headings in vim, and wrote some scripts

2 On December 6, @Estadao broke the story that a govt body investigated the finances of Rio state legislators and their staffs and discovered a US$320K in "irregular" bank transactions by a staffer to @FlavioBolsonaro, @jairbolsonaro's son. politica.estadao.com.br/blogs/fausto-m…
3 The staffer, Fabrício José Carlos de Queiroz, is a cop and worked as Flavio's driver. His monthly salary was $2,272 plus another $3,361 from the police. Queiroz made large cash withdrawals and received deposits from 8 of Flavio's other staffers.

Ok, so, you've heard of that one South African guy who makes electric cars but you probably haven't heard of the Optimal Energy Joule, a Cape Town project that never went to commercial production. Designed by the guy who did the F-Type, it collapsed as a project in 2012:
This one you can actually buy, despite looking like a retrofuristic concept, so long as you have a very large amount of cash. It's the Mercedes Maybach Vision which is one of the weirdest cars I've ever seen - there's basically nothing in that enormous bonnet and it's 2.2m long
