writing up transcripts like this is time consuming (it probably took me 2-3 hours?) but it's nothing compared to how long it took to prepare the talk and I think it's really worth it

i reorganized my blog's front page by category instead of just listing all the posts by date. can't tell if it's better or worse :) jvns.ca
these were the categories I came up with (i think my favorite is probably "how a computer thing works")
I found a kind of nice way to do this: instead of tagging each blog post with a category (which I'm way too lazy to do), I just made a text file with all the posts (github.com/jvns/jvns.ca/b…), organized them into headings in vim, and wrote some scripts

i haven't used nmap much except to scan my home network for fun so if i missed something really important i'd love to know!
also i need to find space in there somewhere for "if you don't run nmap as root it can't send icmp (ping) packets, it's better to run nmap as root"

I passionately want my students to understand why "we" have the views we do, and from where those views originate.

SO: BUCKLE UP. We did something else today.
I am lucky enough to be on a campus that has insane resources - like a giant planetarium that basically functions as...MY PERSONAL IMAX THEATER.

So today, we took a trip.
We started out in...Paris. At the Arc de Triopmhe. Why? Part I was retracing Napoleon's Campaign in the Levant (1798 - 1801).

Specifically, we talked about how a craze for Orientalist imagery went hand-in-hand with military conquest from the beginning of "modern" contact.

It's very telling how few of the wall of gab users that came to yell at me for banning bigots from my site actually address the bigotry part in any reasonable way. They just keep insisting it means "anything you don't like".
I didn't explain this to any of them because, frankly, it is clear none of them are here for the free and open exchange of ideas they claim to love they just want to misunderstand and yell, but the way my site is set up is less about what me or any mod thinks and more about
a core group of mods, which I purposely went out of my way to include some more right leaning mods, discussing an issue together and trying to come to a consensus before anything like a ban happens.

I'm pretty blown away when I look at Winter and Ralphie and see the difference between the two just from their different diets alone.

I feed Ralphie a Prey Model Raw diet, which means I feed exclusively raw meat and bones (chicken, pork, beef, fish, what I can get my hands on)
I do give him some fruits and veggies as treats (though to be real he's like me and prefers fruits over veggies) that are not toxic to dogs, but his diet is mostly raw meat. To be specific, his daily meals are 80% meat, 10% bone, 10% organ (5% of which is liver)
None of this is cooked, and he absolutely loves it - even if he does do everything possible not to touch any of it with his paws, he really does not like getting dirty. The downside - its expensive and time consuming. I have to prep his meals in advance, otherwise pay for premade
