Robot responses need not be engineered. We are living in the era of randomization.

It is also a fiction that human responses are coherent. The egotistical episodic memory is an afterthought in the brain: a rationalization for the underlying randomized processes.
It is extremely uncomfortable, but we have to completely junk our existing legal framework, that is based on the edifice of “free-will” of humans.

We need to honestly develop notions of shared identity. The rise of AI & robots make it more urgent than ever.
The notion of “free will” is a Christian dogma. It is now coated in pseudo-scientific jargon and made into a secular dogma, but the fact remains that our modern jurisdiction derives essentially from Christianity. The sister religions of Judaism and Islam ride on its coattails.
The dogma of free-will in man, “created” by an extra-cosmic being in his own “likeness” is a foolish nonsense that is antagonistic to nature-based belief systems. The extra-cosmic being, typically imagined with a beard, does not exist. His “laws” and “divisions” do not exist.
In Buddhism and Hinduism, this dogma of separate identity, with a “free-will”, is marked as an illusion. Buddha argued elaborately on “pratītya samutpāda” - how the identity of beings arises from the very origin as a reflection of the opposite. Hindu philosophers call it Mithya.
The Notion and its opposite Not(X) are equally illusory. Neither of this can be justified from essential principles, which if dug deep enough, expose themselves in paradox.

What is true is the holistic conception of shared identity. e.g the cybernetic twain of humans + robots.
This itself cannot be separated from nature: the shared ecology of various species. In this entangled web of identities, where is the “will” or the “independent actor”? There is none.

Justice ought to be not about ascertaining causes, but about restoring ecological health.
Until we get to grips with the essential *sacred* nature of inter-relationships of beings, we cannot create an effective system of justice.

The sacred underpinnings can be understood in manifold ways: as the body of Christ, as the word of Yahweh/Allah, or as the Yajña of Dēvas.
“Yajñēna yajñamajayanta dēvāh”

The Dēvas conduct Yajña to achieve the goal which is Yajña itself.

Yajña is a perennial realization of shared identity. This, and only this, is true. Everything else, especially the ego of human self & the even bigger ego of “God”, is an illusion.
