“Most temples have at least one sacred tree (Sthalavriksha), and the greater its age, the more divinity it is imbued with.”
This is the 400 year old Rayan tree in the premises of the Ranakpur Jain temple, dedicated to Ādinātha (Rishabhanātha). This is one of the many sacred trees in Jainism. Ādinātha was supposed to have given first sermon under a Rayan tree.
The sacred Bānyan tree is also present in the temple compound. Ādinātha achieved his enlightenment under this tree.
The temple itself is carved to bring in the spirit of the forest. The pillars look like trees. The Dēvas are supposed to reside in the sacred tree within the temple premises. The same Dēvas are carved on the pillars.
The dome of the temple resembles the canopy of a rain forest. Unless one knows the spirit of nature, and one can feel it within the wild, without any aid or human artifice, I think one cannot understand Dharma.
