"For us in India, proficiency in English perhaps ranks ahead of our aptitude for other subjects. India’s economic success over the past three decades is primarily due to our professionals’ ability to work comfortably in English-language environments."

How #shameful is this !
Despite the constant buzzing about the #EnglishAdvantage for India's economy, where is the hard data to prove that this is an advantage? Nothing.

India's neglect of its own languages, especially in technical and scientific fields, has been a complete disaster for its economy.
The English educated elite in India

1) Speak crap English.
2) Do not speak their own languages particularly well.
3) Have not produced any intellectual property for India worth noting.

India trails behind China in every measurable index on intellectual/cultural creativity.
It is high time India moved away from its #ButlerEconomy speaking #ButlerEnglish. All of India's languages can be motors of its economy, each with a lot of potential to be tapped.

How can a giant country of 1 Billion+ people be held as hostage to a dying colonial power? @acorn
Indians do not need jobs. They need to be entrepreneurs. And the mother tongue is the best vehicle for entrepreneurship.

Away from the circus of elite coolies speaking #ButlerEnglish, Indian entrepreneurs are already the motors of its economy. They all speak in local languages.
How do we make the technical know-how of the 21st century available to Indian entrepreneurs? How do we bring Indian languages into the world of today? Not by discarding them in favor of English.

The answer is simple: Bring universities and R&D labs into Indian languages.
