Protocol on Ireland in the WA: 1. Until the future relationship becomes applicable, a single customs territory between the Union and the United Kingdom shall be established ("the single customs territory"). p. 309:

PD, p. 6: The economic partnership should ensure no tariffs, fees, charges or quantitative restrictions ... with ambitious customs arrangements that... build and improve on the single customs territory provided for in the Withdrawal Agreement
Preamble to the Protocol (in WA) also speaks of the future relationship building on single customs territory
Given all this it is a little hard to understand Mrs May's objections to a future EU-UK customs union

A Northern Ireland only backstop would have been a safety net. But then the UK asked for the CU element of the backstop to be UK-wide. That was more than was required for a safety net. And hence it had to become a bridge.

This insistence that technology can solve the Irish border issue, and presumably by extension the problems at Dover and Calais, takes the pressure off Dublin you would assume...

Presumably there will be unanimity among the 27 regarding the integrity of the Single Market
And if there is a minority in the Tory party that actually wants no deal, there is nothing that anyone outside the U.K. can do about that..

Presumably the intention here is not to threaten punishment (so Irish commentators should calm down), but to express what I assume is a common enough assumption in some quarters, namely that in the end Ireland will blink.
I think that assumption is mistaken, and the politician might reflect on what the consequences for his party are likely to be if they take the country over the edge because they believe this to be so.
It is notable that the politician in question focusses on the damage that would be sustained to the Irish economy in the event of a no deal Brexit. There is no doubt that there would be serious damage.

Here's a thread that is as tight as possible.
1/
First, don’t be fooled by the legalise & jargon.

It cannot be a serious legal text if it assumes that parties can simply “agree not to place physical infrastructure or introduce related checks and controls on the Irish border in any circumstances” (as per para 2).

2/
It is not in the gift of these parties to make such a guarantee without proper consideration of consequences for their international trade partners + responsibilities to their own consumers.

What this proposes in terms of 'Irish border measures' doesn't cut it (more anon.).

Extension of Transition is decided by the Joint Cte (Art.132), which is composed of representatives of UK and EU (ie it's not solely a UK decision)

So even if role for Parliament in discussing extension, it'll also need EU agreement too

Late night for me last night reading the draft deal. Here's a thread starting with the future relationship document, which in someways is the most interesting /1
The future relationship doc is actually a big win for May. Many people will - correctly - point to the fact it's vague, not a legal document, and so on. All of which is true. But it is a political doc the EU can be held to in the future negotiations /2
By pledging to end free movement and using language which *strongly implies* UK will seek some kind of membership of the single market, it promises a 'bespoke deal' and cherry picking of the single market the EU have previously ruled out /3

Applies "unless and until" - so @campaignforleo got what he wanted 2/
Article 6 - "a single customs territory between the Union and the United Kingdom"

That was a UK red line...and legislation will be needed to override Trade Bill provisions intended to block that 3/

Here are the observables from David Davis’s appearance at the @CommonsEUexit. It’s a long thread folks, but I hope a handy digest of his thoughts.
1. Davis does not believe the Irish backstop will require NI to have any different arrangements to the rest of the UK, nor does he believe the rest of the UK will have to align with EU rules for the backstop to work
2. Davis regards June as an artificial deadline for the backstop to be operationalised in the legal text, and says @campaignforLeo agrees with this
