Mexican actresses banded together and asked that Yalitza not be considered for an Ariel, the most prestigious award in Mexican cinema. Tell me more abt how the industry is not racist again?
Roma is going to be nominated left and right for the Ariel’s, but Roma is nothing without Yalitza. Roma itself does not understand what it is without Yalitza. Cuarón will be rewarded but Yalitza is being campaigned against in her own country- what is that other than entitlement?
And please can we do away with Mexicans not being racists forever? They are literally campaigning against her, the center piece and heart and actual star of the ENTIRETY of Roma. She *is* Roma. Any failure to acknowledge that is trash.
I keep seeing ppl say “Well she is nominated for an Oscar, who cares” but *we* should care. Exclusion of Yalitza in any place when she commanded the story excludes other story tellers. Can you imagine a Roma that’s as written, directed + edited by indigenous folx?
This is an ongoing problem in Mexican cinema. Don’t believe me? Remember when MX didn’t care abt Lupita Nyong’o and then she won an Oscar and suddenly MX was claiming her win as a Mexican win? When did we claim her before hand? It was gross af, almost snatching it away from her
But tell me, what Mexican cinema awards has Lupita won or been nominated for, since MX is so quick to claim her as MX? They asked her if she considered her award a win for MX. Lupita. A woman who had never been addressed as MX talent here before.
We really gotta start being honest w ourselves bc we are depriving people of exploring the full extent of their talent + as an afterthought, depriving ourselves of beautiful stories. In this crappy world, we need both, more than ever.
