When i was dead broke — like literally $12 to my name — i got popped twice in a week for turnstile-jumping in NYC. They hit me w/ escalating fines that i couldn’t pay and threatened me with a night in jail if i did it again.

This video is vicious af; being poor is expensive.

There are a lot of ppl pointing out ways to deal with this, including making public transit free

The point is that if i couldn’t pay the $2 or whatever it was back then to get to and from my shitty retail job i certainly couldn’t afford the $100 fine
Public transit and retail aint one-to-one comparisons but I’m sure a <4-percent fare evasion rate is comparable to/lower than the amount clothing stores or whomever lose to theft

Leaving aside the ethics here, fare-jumpers/shoplifters ain’t the reason these entities lose money
Most people in NYC ride the subway to get around, but the cost is not the same for everyone: a weekly unlimited Metrocard is about to be $32 and the monthly $121

Guess what? Poor ppl paying more bc they’re not going to have that lying around + so they pay for individual rides!

There’s probably a way to do a smart piece like this that interrogates whiteness and masculinity, but this just sort of follows around a random kid and presses him abt things he hasn’t thought too deeply abt. (Bc he’s 17.)
Also, curious that he was chosen as a subject. Even for a white Republican kid in an essentially all-white Republican town that went handily for Trump, his life is essentially socially frictionless: not a lot of friends; not in any clubs; doesn’t play sports.
He’s not even in community with all the ppl around him who are just like him!

-people got teased as kids for being awkward around other Black people — "acting white"

-they often internalized that as being about bookishness or good grades and say "Blacks kids said i wasn't Black enough bc I was smart"
@Smadams1019 - that interpretation get cosigned by white ppl, who are of course, vested in the notion that Black ppl have a dysfunctional culture opposed to learning

-the awkward Black kid, now adult, has metabolized the notion that Black people don't like them bc they're not "ghetto"
@Smadams1019 - that person, now adult, is still awkward around Black people but now has created a whole self-aggrandizing and self-fulfilling framework around their discomfort
