@rachsyme I never really had the feeling that I couldn't accomplish things, but whenever I've tried to accomplish things men have appeared out of nowhere to tell me that I'm bad at what I do and all my ideas are wrong.
@rachsyme So whereas I wasn't socialized female within my family, men have taken it upon themselves to socialize me in adulthood (starting with boys in the teenage years).
@rachsyme I still get so many lectures from well-intentioned men telling me "you can't do that," especially in terms of my ideas and filmmaking practices. "You can't make that sort of film after World War II." "You can't retell fairy tales the way you do." "You can't use color like that."
@rachsyme What's especially implied is, ""You can't have an original voice."
@rachsyme I never knew that trying to express oneself authentically could make so many people so mad. Once in class a guy actually stormed out in a rage during a segment of my film, stating, "I refuse to watch a scene where the man has no agency." (!)
@rachsyme It's sort of like you know there is this disapproval of women doing things, but you don't know how strong it is until you push up against it. It's like this invisible shield. It's wild.
@rachsyme It's like he was saying, ""You're not allowed to make a film about yourself. You have to make a film about me." 😂
