Yep literally a whole chapter about this in #LowerEd and sooooo much work left to do on why, how, to what ends. How are those programs structured? Racialized? Gendered? Outcomes? Private loan markets? Identity formation?
Most students I talked to had a very clear identity around their graduate work that draws on greater hustle of entrepreneurship and self-worth. A high price for moral credentialing.
No one knows what these outcomes look like and that's bananas.
We also know very little about what I called the eco-system of corporate PhDs. The dissertation consultants, editors, counselors that charge for the services considered part of the traditional PhD process. Part of the store is rapid credentialing in professions like Healthcare
And education. The public sector consumes a lot of these degrees through schooling employment, ie principals and administrators
In education research there is a research program in understanding these pathways. In sociology, there is a research program in understanding professional closure, stratification, and racialized organizations.
In econ there is a program to understand human capital, racialized markets. In psychology, a research program in understanding efficacy and identity.
If this population was not coded as black women we would probably have more progress on all of these questions.
Beating this drum makes me tired.
