I am very impressed that @tedwheeler has listened to community concerns and has called for training and an independent investigation into @PortlandPolice relationship with fascist organizers. However, we have to ground this work in the realization that it is bigger than protests.
While protests and counter protests often grab the headlines, the true impact of a police bureau that potentially sympathizes with right wing organizers and their ideology results in the deaths of Quanice Hayes, or Terrell Johnson. wweek.com/news/2018/06/0…
It also results in our black community being more heavily policed than others. portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2018/…
It results in Jeremy Christian not being taken as a serious threat before he murdered 2 people on public transportation. wweek.com/news/2017/05/3…
It results in a criminal justice system in which community members have to bail out people of color so they can be reunited with their family after lack of money was the only think keeping them separated. oregonlive.com/portland/2018/…
So as we as a community look to how we can improve our police bureau and finally seem to have a sense of self reflection from our mayor, it can’t just be the people who have had access to city officials throughout recent times who are brought in to the discussion.
There are dozens of community organizations, activists, organizers, and victims of @PortlandPolice that should be involved in redesigning what policing, in a city who’s values are in opposition to the current Bureau, should look like.
