Portland Police Bureau’s relationship with alt-right fascist organizations is more about PPB than the alt-right. Yes those clowns are dangerous but the police existed long before them and will exist long after. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize here.
PPB shares the same ideology as the alt-right but does so with all of the resources of the state. They kill people without consequences and ruin the lives of our community members. They disproportionately target people of color. PPB is more dangerous than Joey Gibson.
Instead of asking: “why don’t the police take a hands off approach to leftists like they do for the fascists?”, we are asking, “why doesn’t PPB beat up both sides”. That doesn’t solve the larger issues that are much larger than protests.
If we allow the mayor to turn this into an issue of the alt-right and not focus on the police then we are letting the real terror of our community, the PPB, off the hook.
And yes I understand that the fascists are dangerous and also indicative of larger societal issues, but Joey Gibson is a literal clown. PPB are terrorizing people on the streets of Portland as we speak. Ruining lives. Don’t lose sight of that.
These texts should be seen as further evidence that the police are the antithesis of the values of our community not simply that the police have a cozy relationship with a bad guy. It’s bigger than that.
What we need to solve is not that one guy was texting Joey Gibson and gassing him up, it’s the PPB culture where that would be normalized and accepted, because that’s the same PPB culture that lead to the murder of Quanice Hayes and so many more.
Patriot Prayer supporters and Proud Boys would be PPB officers if they didn’t already have criminal records and substance abuse problems and PPB officers would be Patriot Prayer supporters if they didn’t already find one of the most effective ways to advance fascism and racism.
