This is both a great memo and a great memo about management.
I will accept an argument that that is not a memo, but that argument is wrong, and probably weighted heavily in "This is far too well-written to be a memo."

Memos are understudied as a form factor for great writing, which seems suboptimal given how much is riding on them.
"How much is riding on memos?"

I mean, to a first approximation, if every academic journal in the world ceased publication it would be years until you noticed and if every memo was burnt you'd die in about 5 weeks plus or minus 2.

Question I get fairly frequently: is it still possible to make money in startups or as a creator on the Internet, or has the opportunity passed or been sewed up by AppAmaGooBookSoft or similar?

The answer to this: unambiguously, yes, opportunities are changing but *better.*
You should prefer being a founder in 2019 to being in the same position in 2009 or 1999. The larger market, much better ecosystem, existence of mobile, better OSS, etc swamp the impact of year to year availability of capital or increased competition or what have you.
Now given that you may not have a time machine available and aren’t choosing between those periods but are actually choosing “start now” or “start later” I think it’s a nuanced conversation but in general I’d be in the “bias towards earlier” camp.

Always excited to see new takes on developer tooling. conveyor.com , from my buddies at Wildbit, is an interesting one; it situates the deeply technical git integration in the social reality of a software team rather than bolting the software team onto Git hosting.
The longer I work at a highly-productive software company with hundreds of people the more I feel that flat textfiles are not merely not the right abstraction to reason about software, they're merely epiphenomena of a social process which happen to be machine readable.
But there are a lot of things which are machine readable, like say binaries, which you would in most cases not want humans to be reasoning over. And I'm getting to the point where I think source code is not the thing to reason about, not really.

This, this is what operational competence looks like.
Software companies often have it in sales or operations but very rarely in recruiting. Ivy League placement departments (which are not called placement departments because they have nowhere clear that crisp an understanding of the one job) basically can’t even diagram it.
“We’re going to break the problem into stages, develop a methodology for each of them, write some spreadsheets, and then hire tens of folks who will specialize at each stage” is not supposed to be a bleeding edge technology but it is basically everywhere the first time tried.

Memo to anyone taking @nytdavidbrooks column on 7 tribes (sic!) yesterday seriously: Whenever Brooks cites a source that confirms the line he's been taking for a while, he bets you won't check that source. When you do, as yesterday, you'll find he misrepresents its contents. 1/2
2/ I hear some of @nytimes usual suspects have been talking that Brooks piece up as brilliant. Yesterday I pointed out how he conflated pride and shame, distorting the underlying source material. Here I'll just point out one key difference he fails to address....
3/ His both-sider argument requires conservatives and progressives to be similarly rigid. But the points of disagreement he cites vary in the degree to which they are subject to empirical test. That is: do conservatives or progressives more deeply believe things that aren't true?

Well, it's either not going to end well for Johnson or it's not going to end well for the body of the Conservatives and its current leadership.

But here's the thing: Given the Conservatives' current disregard for anything approaching the national interest, I don't care.➡️
Obviously, it bothers Julia because her interests are relatively narrow, ideological and - to be blunt - self-serving. An argument over Johnson would probably provoke a schism within the conservative movement that would damage Julia's personal and professional prospects. ➡️
She'd have to pick a side: rational(-ish) 'One Nation' Conservatives or doctrinaire, populist/libertarian 'Tea Party' Conservatives. From her various outpourings, she probably leans towards the latter and they are probably unelectable as a stand-alone unit. ➡️
