I’d been a Christian since childhood. Raised in church. I’d been learning about God all my life. Already actively serving Him. I knew that what it would take for God not to follow through with discipline would be nothing less than Him being less than who the Bible said He was...
I shook all over. What if He doesn’t mind? What if this is OK with Him? What if He’s not holy after all? What if we made a bigger deal out of all of this than it really was? What if grace means do what the heck you want? “One of My servants is deep in sin. No big deal. Carry on.”
THANK GOD His chastising hand came for me & like a fury. Such a fury He broke me to pieces. Broke me free. I never returned to that pattern of defeat. She was finally dead. And God? Oh He proved true to His word. Holy. Righteous. Merciful. A Father who disciplines those He loves.
Church, God has come for us. Our house is heaped with sin. We have been arrogant, deceptive, unjust, hypocritical, perverse, jealous & hateful. We’ve shown the world charlatans, not Christlikeness. We’ve not stood up for the oppressed. We have sinned against our women & children.
Thank God He’s come for us. Thank God He cares. Thank God this is not OK with Him. Thank God He is doing exactly what He said He’d do. Judgment begins in the house of God. He is breaking us. And if we’d repent, He’d rebuild us & do a work in our time that would slack jaw angels.

I come from such a dark place & painful memories of feeling too unclean for Jesus to want to touch. I was wrong about Him. Turned out, Jesus was clean enough for both of us. You can’t be unclean enough to get Jesus dirty. He’s not grossed out by you. If you’re His, you’re clean.
I could not break out of my pattern of sin till I began to believe that what He said He had done for me was true of me. I was clean. Forgiven. Redeemed. Set apart. Loved. Chosen. Planned for. My pattern finally broke because my false beliefs finally broke. Believe God, loved one.

A year ago, my beloved uncle & only remaining relative of my parents’ generation, told me he needed to speak with me about an important matter. I sat across from him on the couch of his home in San Diego & he told me, of all unexpected things, a story about his life in banking...
I had no idea where the story was going but it did not matter much. He is the kind of man you could listen to forever but I did wonder what it had to do with me. He told me about the enormous crisis that happened in the banking world, a well known crisis, & what a mess it was...
He said what the crisis would have taken to fix would’ve been such an ordeal & would require so much work & put him in such opposition to key people he had worked with amicably for so long, it didn’t seem worth it. Mighta killed him. He took a good job elsewhere. Ah, I thought...

In my book about transracial adoption I went out of my way NOT to claim universality. My story, I said many times; mine alone. I am not sure why a few white people feel the need to email & tell me I shouldn't claim to speak for all transracial adoptees. I never have & never will.
I actually wrote in the book that I've met plenty of adoptees who felt similar things, and I've met some who never did. I believe what people tell me. I ALSO think people can change, and want different things, and we should be better at letting them change and want those things.
Many years ago, I was that adoptee who wasn't going to look for my birth family. I would have told you I didn't think about it much, probably wouldn't do it. And now, you know, I'm me.

This night 19 years ago was the lowest point in my adult life. After six months in Sweden I had no job, no prospects & about three euro in my pocket. I didn't want to be here any more.
In truth, I didn't want to be anywhere any more.
I was a total failure.
I'd just quit playing music in pubs because my confidence was shot, and as I dodged the fare to get the train home to the apartment I shared with my girlfriend, who was a student as broke as me, I was praying she wouldn't just throw me out on the snowy street.
I would have deserved it.
I was very little use to her, financially or otherwise. I was still chasing the dream of being a journalist & writer, but it seemed further away than ever.
I remember the emptiness when I told her it would be OK if she just told me to leave.
