@StandUp4Brexit @DrGerardLyons Import tariffs from OUTSIDE the EU are clothes 12%, shoes 4%, which goes into the exchequer. The Govt MIGHT choose to zero-rate these to make them cheaper, AND eliminate VAT on gas/elec, AND reduce VAT on tourism but how will they make up the difference? fullfact.org/europe/will-ge…
@StandUp4Brexit @DrGerardLyons We are still going to need to import food from SOMEWHERE. Currently, we import nearly 30% of our food from other EU countries at zero-rate tariffs. The other 19% comes from RoW, with tariffs imposed or not, depending on what kind of trade agreement the EU has with those countries
@StandUp4Brexit @DrGerardLyons Coffee cannot be imported from within the EU because it is not grown in Europe. Currently, the EU imposes a 7.5% tariff on imports of coffee, standardised across all countries with whom we have a trade agreement. Again, the Govt could CHOOSE to reduce this ... but is it likely?
@StandUp4Brexit @DrGerardLyons This is where it gets complicated. Under WTO rules alone, if we zero-rate ANY imports, we then have to offer the same terms to EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY that we trade with! Result? Zero import revenue to the exchequer. With our National Debt at nearly £2.8T, how likely is this?
@StandUp4Brexit @DrGerardLyons Just got locked out of my account and had to verify my identity. Clearly I am rattling someone's cage! Now, let's talk about the impact on farmers. Zero-rating imports of food would devastate our farmers' livelihoods, as it would open the floodgates to cheap shite from the USA.
@StandUp4Brexit @DrGerardLyons Furthermore, with no trade deals agreed so far with the EU27 and the 50 other countries that we already enjoy Preferential Trade Agreements with, via our membership of the EU, our farmers and fishermen who rely on exports would then have to impose standard WTO export tariffs 👿

How will the farming "Govt subsidies" be funded?
