Something I didn't learn until couple years ago (and it cost me $$$) -

When your black printer cartridge goes dry, and your docs start printing light, you can switch your printer options to "color only" and it will make a passable black by blending the color inks.
This won't work for photos/graphics, of course, but is fine for letters/envelopes. I've gotten as much as a year of extra print life out of my two-cartridge set that way. (Not that I print much.)

Don't forget to change settings back when you run out of color, and replace both.
The options are in a different place for each company's printer drivers. On my Canon, it's under maintenance-ink cartridge settings.

(But when it starts printing red, or yellow, you still have to pop out on a Sunday and buy ink.)
