#Cameroun History includes:
👉🏻 1st Oct 1961: #BritishSouthernCameroons voted in a @UN plebiscite to join #LaRepubliqueDuCameroun as two equal states in a federal system.

👉🏻Series of military crackdowns on #SouthernCameroons whenever there were complaints of marginalization

@ChimamandaReal the Nigerian novelist captures this sad tale: The carnage of the #Cameroons:
A story about an African nation’s fatal disregard of its minority population. A story about the muddled sludge of colonial history.

On 8th Nov 2016 Lawyers protested against imposition of the French system (civil law) in the common law courts. (@africatechie explains these differences & implications
)

The lawyers were arrested, beaten, their wigs ceased: why? the regime's method!

21 Nov: Teachers began a sit down strike in protest agst abuses on the Educational System; the civil society joined with the Coffin Revolution: #FreeMancho airing their grievances.

Comme d'habitude: military crackdown, arrests, deaths.

6 days after coffin revolution the students in Buea University protested.

The way they were treated by #CamerounArmy remains totally unacceptable. I was there!

No doubt @HonWirbaJoseph's speech in Parliament: #WirbaForce

”A slave has risen in the master’s house:” In a parliamentary session on 14 Dec 2016, @HonWirbaJoseph spoke the minds of every bitter Southern Cameroonian citizen. afrohustler.com/wirba-joseph-1/

Dec 22: Bishop's Memo to #PaulBiya: "these symptomatic unrests are characteristics of a deeper unease among the inhabitants of this geo-circumscription of our nation."

This letter traced the #AnglophoneProblem- always met with Military violence

Some relief came with the ad hoc committee & initiation of dialogue with consortium. Sadly, this was banned, Lawyers & teachers arrested & whisked to Yde on charges of terrorism @AgborNkonghoF

@CrisisGroup will later write: crisis at the crossroads

As if that was not enough, internet was shut down for 194days in the #Anglophone regions.
aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/c…

Many couldn't take this anymore. The anger kept rising & within the silence of no internet alot of convictions were shared via SMS: 'Enough was Enough'

9/X
Till 22nd Sept 17, even after Internet was restored #BiyaRegime made no attempt at any more dialogue, schools remained shutdown. While the #UNGA72 was going on #SouthernCameroonians came out with peace plants demanding to be heard.

A day like no other

1st Oct '17 @sisiku_ayuktabe:

“We, the people of #SouthernCameroons reaffirm autonomy over our heritage & our territory...”

The story of this day remains an indescribable pain to many who lost family, bread winners & others never seen till today.

Filled with anger, the news of a group TO DEFEND the people & a new nation became great relief & excitement to many. These were THE AMBA Boys. It was clear:

"we cannot just stand by and watch them killing our people"

@EmmanuelFreuden

The Amba Boys won the hearts of the people. They were respected, admired, revered as the courageous of all.

It was an excitement to meet them. Many felt safe in areas controlled by them. The fear of #CamerounArmy was tempered by love for #AmbaBoys

13/X
Their mission was simple: defend their people from the brutality of #CamerounArmy & restore their homeland #Ambazonia.

The #BiyaRegime called them terrorists, rebels, but the people saw them as heroes: respectfully speaking of their deeds.

14/X
Though RFs are admired their popularity has dropped due to alleged abuses.
This isn't clear yet as besides the various “official” Amba, there are bandits & armed gangs being paid by gov't sources to undermine the reputation of the RFs.

The gov'ts use of force vis à vis the admiration of the people towards their sons ready to stand up to what they call a brutal military has driven a growing number of moderate Cameroonians to throw their support behind the need of a new nation.

Human Rights Groups have notwithstanding accused both extremists: the #CamerounArmy fighting to defend the one and Indivisible Cameroon & the #AmbaBoys defending Ambazonia as guilty of human rights violations.

Commenting on these "abuses on both sides" @billyb2009 (Anglophone crisis monitoring project) cautions that the Amba Forces must be careful less they make the quest of what they ardently desire: A free #Ambazonia more difficult.

@cwjroberts @apocsnet
Many frontline activists continue to challenge this narrative of abuses on both sights.
@BohHerbert of #Morisc explained that there is clearly an aggressor & a defendant and both can never be equalled.

@AmnestyWARO @hrw @LewisMudge
In a tweet via @GovAmba, @SamuelSako on the alleged abuses retorts that there is no doubt #CameroonArmy always seeks to tag RFs terrorists.
He has asked the LGA to urgently investigate RFs not respecting the Ethics of Self Defence & IHLs
