But first: think back to how you first learned to computer. How did you learn? Was it a chore, or was it exciting, delightful, a means to an end?

Most of us learned by tinkering around in low risk environments. We learned from our peers, and we learned because it was *fun*.
I personally learned most of what I know about Unix by reading other people's .bash_history files and running the commands to see what they would do. Until I copied someone running `man` something.

When people ask me how they can convince their bosses to shell out for observability, I often toss them two links -- the DORA report by @nicolefv et al and the @stripe developer productivity paper.

Pie chart-induced eye trauma aside, his findings are blunt, and resonate completely with my experiences running systems. To wit:

1) change is the trigger in 2/3 of outages
2) config drift is deadly
3) we don't know why things fail
4) infra changes are a shrinking %
5) certs lol

1. The only lens you should need for debugging your code is that of your own instrumentation.

2. Never let code into production unless you can answer the question: how will I know if this breaks or doesn't work?
3. Instrument your code while pretending you're a serverless dev, and you'll do all the right things.

4. Instrumentation isn't just for "at scale", it is the only way to inspect what your code *actually does* when it meets infra and users. It will improve your life today.
5. Magic auto-instrumentation will only ever catch the dumbest, most generic problems. It doesn't have to be *hard* or tedious to instrument, but someone, somewhere needs to roughly understand your code when instrumenting.

Ok, so if you follow me, you know I call Congress *pretty much every weekday* (though sometimes when shit is just way too absurd, like this weekend, I leave them voicemails after hours too). I started last year during the healthcare stuff, because of a compelling personal story.
This sad tale of woe was my friend & hair client Julie, whom I met when I was in @PaulMitchellEdu in the mid-00s. Julie was a total redneck, and I loved her, even if she thought Obama sucked. She was a kind & loyal friend. I gave her great highlights (you guys have no idea).
Julie’s dad died of a massive heart attack at age 40, right in front of her. She was 16. Soon after, she had her first daughter. She dropped out, went to work at the first of many low wage & benefit-less jobs. Child support was always spotty. She did what all moms do, sacrificed.

Uche was one of those students in school who occasionally wore bogus long sleeved shirts...
