i feel like I keep seeing people (who very obviously read fic/take part in fandom) criticizing and mocking any sort of serious discussion about fan culture and its importance, and treating creative content based on fandoms as something less than but you can't have it both ways
when you treat fic as less than or not "real writing," when you regurgitate everything about the status quo and how it's something only silly teen girls do and god forbid an adult (woman, usually) partake in something lighthearted and fun
when you mock anyone that wants to take a serious look at the sociological aspect of fandoms and how fan creators are so very often women, queer, gay, trans, people of color, that don't see themselves represented unless it's a stereotype and want to rewrite a story of their own
when you take away the significance of seeing yourself represented, or traumas discussed through familiar characters, or emotional continuity actually taken into account in a story you know, even if it's only through your own writing or other amateur writing
you can't have it both ways. you can't refuse to acknowledge that most of your favorite writers are probably adults and then tell anyone over 18 they can't have fun or encroach on your space, that they're somehow inherently perverted for doing so
you can't mock fandom and spaces like ao3 for treating the preservation of fan works as a serious and worthwhile endeavor, and then expect fan content to always and forever be there for you to consume. you can’t have it both ways
