Musicians

I want to share some thoughts on money. Somehow, musicians (+ artists in general) have a complicated relationship with money.

On one hand, we fight for the right to be paid fairly for our work.

On the other hand, some associate making money as selling out. (thread)
Also, I've seen some refusing to make money out of certain artistic projects, implying that making money from artistic or community endeavours to be a wrong thing to do.
I feel that if we make something that provides value and we want to be paid for it, that is perfectly understandable.

It's an exchange.

You perform at a venue & they pay for your services.

Now, if you're a new artist & you have no experience, that's another discussion.
If you're doing this as a career, part of it is learning how to make money from what you do.

If you're uncomfortable, you can also make money from other work and keep your art separate. That's okay too, it's up to you.

You have a choice.
Money is an exchange.

There's nothing inherently good or bad about it.

You can spend money to do good things or buy good things.

You can spend money to do bad things or buy bad things.

You decide.
Money isn't evil.

People are. People who use it for evil purposes.

Your music isn't bad or evil because it made you money to pay your rent or buy you coffee or buy you a new guitar.

It means it's good. It made people happy!
If you're not making money with music as your career (or side income), realise that maybe:

- your music hasn't reached your audience yet
- you're not good enough (yet)
- you haven't written & released the song that will make your career grow

You can do things to fix this.
- your music hasn't reached your audience yet

Learn to promote better.
Learn marketing.
Work harder.
- you're not good enough (yet)

Take music lessons.
Study music online.
Watch YouTube videos and learn.
Practice and make more music.
- you haven't written & released the song that will make your career grow

Write more songs.
Learn about songwriting.
Study the songs you love.
Record and release more songs.
Now quote me on this.

"It's easier to blame other people for your failures, rather than take responsibility for your success."

Repeat after me.

"It's easier to blame other people for your failures, rather than take responsibility for your success."
