An author was asked if they worried about male readership when they wrote female protagonists.

My fellow dudes, I have one thing to say to you if this is your worry.

I'm sorry.

You missed out on tessering with Meg, hiding from Thread with Menolly, finding magic with Lucy...
I'm sorry you didn't get to hunt the devilfish with Karana, or ride dragons with Lessa, or meet Proginoskes, or find faith and a sword with Pakksenarion, or experience love and fear with Anyanwu.

I'm terribly sorry that no one shared the wonder of these women with you.
Did you never sing crystal with Killashandra Ree? Not sing for the oaks with Eddi McCandry? Not spin the moon with Jennifer and the Night Threads?

And by missing out then, you're missing out now. You were missing out 30 years ago, now... I couldn't even begin to list it all.
It is ABSOLUTELY important that people be able to find themselves in books and movies and TV.

It is ALSO absolutely important that we learn to see ourselves in people who are different in that media. And to see people who we *can't* see ourselves in, but who are still people
I am truly sad for boys who didn't get to experience the wonder that I did discovering the world and universe and magic with female protagonists just as much as male ones. One of the first chapter books Dad read to me was Wrinkle in Time.
One of the first books we read together was Island of the Blue Dolphins. The essay that got me into my alma mater was on Wind in the Door.

If you think boys don't, or worse SHOULDN'T read books with female protagonists... I'm sad that you're missing out on so much magic.
For those asking about the references:

Meg: Wrinkle in Time and Wind in the Door
Menolly: Dragonsinger/Dragonsong
Lucy: Chronicles of Narnia
Karana: Island of the Blue Dolphins
Lessa: Dragonriders of Pern
Proginoskes: Wind in the Door (Meg again)
Pakksenarion: Deed of Pakksenarion
Anyanwu: Wild Seed
Killashandra Ree: Crystal Singer
Eddie McCandry: War for the Oaks
Jennifer: Night Threads trilogy

And, as mentioned, I could of course have gone on. These were just some I remember from growing up.
